View all 20 comments. As this is my first taste of his writing, I can sense the similarities- many characters in a Latin American village, the opening sentences containing flashbacks, and a high level of magical realism.
The non-linear story, told by an anonymous narrator, begins with the morning of Santiago Nasar’s death. The Vicario twins spend three years in prison awaiting trial, but are acquitted in court, after which Pablo marries his lover and Pedro leaves for the armed forces. It doesn’t describe quite the correct set of events that take place in the novel, or even the actual POV of the novel, but oh, well It is written in pseudo-journalistic style in the form of interviewed accounts staged 20 years after the tragedy.

Ive not read this book in English but in Spanish. Aug 12, David Jimenez rated it it was ok. Why did everything happen muedte such a way? The material has been so cleverly arranged that the narration picks up in emotional impact as the “investigation” develops, and the story finishes off with a visceral climax that leaves you feeling as if you had been punched in the solar plexus.
In this novella, Marquez tells through the eyes of an unnamed narrator the events that lead to the murder of Santiago Nasar.
