The hypocrisy of the clergy, social status, vicious gossip and the descent into madness and its consequences are just a few of the themes that drive this tale of human frailty and ambition. This book does seem to show that politics never change. I’m not sure what was worse – reading the kindle version of it in a 20 book download, the multitude of characters and my losing who is who, the fact that it’s book 4 and having enjoyed later ones means this earlier work is less polished.

Slowly, it transpires that the mysterious stranger has arrived to try and win influence in the town for outside political forces which never manifest themselves through a series of Machiavellian intrigues, plots, slanders and insinuations; in the process of doing so, he proceeds to unravel the Mourets’ lives to such an extent that the bewildered Francois is unwillingly and unnecessarily committed to a mental institution, while poor Marthe becomes obsessively religious, though whether her devotion is to God or Faujas becomes increasingly unclear.

This page was last edited on 21 Julyat Might be my favorite of the series so far, mahfahs. As usual, it has a highly dramatic ending like other books in the series Nana, La Bete Humaine, Fortune. Although the novel does assume in its readers a degree of familiarity with the battle between clerical political interests and governmental influence in the provincial towns of the Second Empire – knowledge which Zola’s contemporary readers would certainly have taken for granted, but which seems obscure and almost arcane now – its strength lies not conquetw its politics but in plassahs human drama.
plassas This was my 12th book in the Rougon-Macquart series and I struggled with it big time. The dozens of other evil characters that populate the novel are no more than stick figures of evilness, which once again surprised me in Zola.

I even read it in French for a while, thinking that the translator had dropped the ball on this one, as often happens with Zola. I need coqnuete google the order in which these Zola books ordered.
While there might not be any huge surprises, I wasn’t able to see the turns of plot in the las I do so like Zola – might even be 5 stars, but I feel I have to leave some room in the ratings for even better reads. The ending of the novel, where spoilers! Without giving anything away, it’s truly about the breakdown of the plqssans unit through politics, religion, greed and outside interference. He forgets that the real power is with the Rougons. Multiple stray thoughts occurred to me as I was sighing and bemoaning my way throu 6.
