ivine Roy trains his mind to shut out the present and finds comfort in his African escapism–anything to avoid dealing with the consequences of his actions in real life, and his mother’s singing. The world we live in is not run by cuddly, strong bears, graceful sleek cats or loyal, friendly dogs. At times you almost forget that Roy lies comatose in a hospital, but you will remember the images Welsh puts into your mind. That said, this book disturbed me as no other book has done–and not in a good way.

And his greatest sense of conscience, his strongest turn as a social reformer. He briefly revives a few months later when he meets a woman and genuinely feels love for the first time. I guess the reputation of Irvine Welsh should have warned me! These layers kept me incredibly engaged and continually intrigued throughout the entire novel. Still think this is his best book. He feels that he will be ready to resurface and wake up when he finally kills the stork, which he believes encompasses everything negative and harmful wlesh he’s experienced in his life.

Irvine Welsh was the literary hero among my generation of working-class Central Belt Scots for his graphic novels set in Edinburgh sink estates, riddled with sex, drugs, violence, and written in dextrously rendered phonetic dialect. I remember the drabness of Heathrow, followed by the depressing flight north of the border. Roy is a complex character to say the least.
This bleak tale is told by Roy Strang, a jug-eared underachiever who happens to be in a coma. Will you like this book? Dec 30, Aaron Wilkinson rated it it was amazing. That being said, however, his books are always powerful, nightmarres disturbing, and always very well written.
Equally though, there irfine a skill in being able to show it all, and not come off reading like a hack. Probably not for the faint-hearted or easily-offended, but a ballsy harrowing into one radge’s hell.
It goes in between current stage of awareness of Ray in ITU, to the deeper subconscious stage hunting for Marabou stork and what happens in reality and how it all end it where it is.
Want to Read saving…. Welsh at his deepest darkest best – without doubt one of the finest authors of his generation. At the Glasgow Citizens’ last spring, a stage version of his junkie tragi-comedy Trainspotting bred enough raw rage and pity to blow down the Gorbals high-rises across the street. It is peppered with stylistic idiosyncrasies.
