I think one of jf things you have to be prepared to do with this book, especially if you are already a writer or a journalist for many years as I was when I first picked it up, is to let your armour down. I’m usually a bit gunshy of “how to write” books, but I thought this one came pretty close to being as good as they get. Her mother was a suffragette and served as the first president of the Minnesota League of Women Voters. I loved this book.

Ueland was raised in a relatively progressive household; her father, an immigrant from Norway, was a prominent lawyer and judge.
I read many books about creative people’s lives, hoping to glean some knowledge and inspiration. I imagine her striding across a classroom, pausing to press her palms iff a desktop, arms stiff as she hammers home some point.

I found something in this book that I lost several years ago.
The book is directed more toward fiction writers than those who specialize in nonfiction, but some of Ueland’s suggestions can be applied universally. The poor wives are reminded that that is just why wives are so splendid — because they are so unselfish and self-sacrificing and that is the wonderful thing about them!

What really do they know? I have kept this book for years and recommended it to friends who didn’t seem to like it as much as I did. She believed in long walks as healthy and also to show respect for this earth and deep listening to show love to those around usand I find her a wonderful role model. Everybody is talented original and has something important to say. I have no problem with either, but I wanted to know what she had to say, and what she had to say was very useful, just far far scantier than expected.
There are many people, you can see, who consider worry a kind of duty. Never have I felt so close to an author’s writing, I would choose to have tea with her over almost anyone in history. It’s a writing book, but you won’t find anything here about plot, characterization, POV, or structure.
