He was shakin’ so hard that he couldn’t control the gun. He wanted what he couldn’t get. A small town barber in an unnamed town near Carterville tells his customer who is new in the town Ring Lardner’s Haircut is a one-way conversation piece and is well written.

Jim had the whole northern half of the State and was on the road five days out of every week. Short Stories 1 O. He was known first for his sports writing—especially for his love of baseball—culminating in his classic novel You Know Me Al. Long-winded and repetitive for what it is. The reader becomes as morally implicated in the death as the barber and the townspeople by accepting what was hairvut their use of the young man Paul to rid themselves of a troublemaker and prankster that they hated and feared.
Jim went around town bragging of his latest prank, telling everyone except Doc Stair, who he figured would be angry ; however, Paul haircu Doc what happened and Doc promised to make Jim suffer. I’m not sure exactly what the moral of it is but I appreciate what finally happened to Jim. His wife and the kids waited and waited and of course he didn’t show up. My Dad read this to my sister and me, this one and The Monkey’s Paw made sure we would seek therapy as adults.
Jim certainly was a character! While Lardner’s fiction continued to remain humorous on the surface, it moved toward irony that exposed man’s folly and inhumanity in a small-town society of his own making.
