The narrative style is engaging and simple. The beauty of her writing lies in its simplicity and in her ability to bring her characters to life. It is a vicious circle. Not by just one but, both the participants are needed to make a relationship like marriage, successful.

Their relationship becomes the victim of aspirations and expectations culminating in Shrimati leaving him to pursue her passion for History. Not a lot of authors look into these phenomenon or write about it, which is perhaps what the Indian society needs. But maybe, it is a sign of the author’s excellence that I feel so strongly about the characters?

The innocence of falling in love to the childhood teasing and connecting to the fragrance of bakula flower seem out fashioned but works vey well with the setback of the story.

What happens when such people grow old? Shrimati has to put up with a taunting mother-in-law, who now gets a chance to get back at her enemies. This book is a classic example of degradation of relationships. They are neighbours, share the same surname but their families do not get along with each other.

The idyllic life of Hubli-Dharwad, the harshness and hustle bustle of Mumbai are pictured in a way only Sudha Murthy could have done. And she cannot blame anyone else for bakyla. The result is the protagonist Shrimati, marrying Shrikant despite the problems that she would have to face, the chief ones being – hostility from his family is gent,y is not the daughter-in-law they would have liked, not only because she is not wealthy, but also because of a family feud going back many decades, and secondly, she has to give up her career aspirations.

The open ending is quite appropriate here, but still I would like to assume that at one point of time they again met and lived with each other happily!! Sudha Murthy, a lady of few words, her books always cater to some or the other socially relevant issue.

The author beautifully describes their love, the caring and the longingness that they share for each other. He started growing in his professional life and ssudha success in all steps.
Although you can pretty much guess the plot, but one should read fakls the simplicity of the plot. The differential appreciation of Bhamati, the woman who was married to a sage who was writing a commentary on the Dharmasastra and who took care of him silently, is an indication of the things to come. There is one Bakula tree who separates their houses. It made me so mad when Shrimati just watched life pass her by when she had so much untapped potential.

I loved it from Line one. Sounds like a good book, nonetheless.
Shrimati gives up her idea of higher studies only to work and also not in the History department and help repay the loan. She did her MTech in computer science, and is now the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. He puts all his passion and love for his job. The connection with the story for me started instantly from the very first page as the background and religious practices which Sudha Murthy has explained here, I know it and have seen very closely too.
