I recommend this to everyone, especially fans of the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfield. The side characters were as wonderful as the main duo. Our hero, Matt Cruse, is a cabin boy aboard the luxury liner Aurora. Airborn is a young adult novel by Kenneth Oppel.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is YA. Unlike many kennety YA books, it also manages to capture the feel not only of a bygone and highly fictionalized era but of the attitudes of people who live in that era. Bruce suffers severe wounds on his leg from the cloud cat, but Matt and Kate escape into the forest. Thankfully, Matt and Kate do not require a ton of romance to keep the relationship interesting and enjoyable to read.

Suffice it to say this keneth has so much adventure and excitement, suspense and action, yet also heaps of thoughtfulness and sensitivity and absolutely marvelous characterization.
Matt reveals that he will attend the Airship Academy, with the help of the reward money for finding Szpirglas’ base of operations.

Books by Kenneth Oppel. It had some potential, but fell flat, like the shipwrecked air ship, though it never got inflated again. Add in class issues and an adventurous young lady with scientific aspirations and it more than fills pages. The pirates proceed to leave, but both ships are caught in a storm.

This book is similar, but has enough of its own thrills that you don’t mix them up. I heard about this company because mateys of mine worked as voice actors for the company. Kate is not only a rich girl, but she has a love for some oddities, such as exploring the strange creatures that she finds in their world. Kenneth Oppel was unknown to me, although he has been writing for some time, partly because his previous books seem to have been aimed at a younger audience.

I would have liked to see a bit more of this, which is why I mark it down a bit, but perhaps this comes in a sequel. Matt could get a bit overbearing and Kate was a bit short-sighted and stubborn. Additionally, the world contains fictional animal species such as flying creatures, which live their entire lives in the sky.
